Plenty of action on today's ride - a leisurely climb up Whites Level, with the only interesting bits when Steve and Ian both reported non-functioning rear brakes.

A quick Malt Loaf stop at the top, then it was off down the Black run. The Powell party was slightly delayed because Steve decided it was a good idea to change his front brake pads, so that he at least had one working brake for the descent.

First part of the Black run was relatively uneventful - everyone made the board walk without incident, but then came the rock garden :-). Viv & Steve went first, to show Danny & Ashley how its done. Viv came down text book style; Steve's not quite so. Ian was standing at the bottom of the steep slope, camera pressed against his face. As he took the picture of Steve at the top of the slope, all was fine, however then the view finder goes black while the camera takes and processes the picture etc. While that was going on, he could hear Steve's bike clattering down the slope and suddenly realised it sounded as though it was coming straight for him. Ian took the camera away from his face just as Steve shoulder planted the ground right in front of us. I just managed to grab hold of Steve to stop him sliding further. Thankfully no apparent damage although I suspect there will be some interesting bruises.

Danny copied his Mother's example and came down text book style despite an initial false start. Unfortunately Ashley took after his dad but thankfully bailed before it went badly wrong.

During the climb back up, Steve realised he was losing pressure from his rear tyre, so we had a brief delay to put more air into it before continuing the normal Whites Level descent.

During the fire road link to the next section, it was obvious Steve needed a puncture repair, so we all headed to the end of the fire road in preparation. Despite managing to warn Ashley and Steve that there was a sharp left hand bend coming up on the loose fire road descent, Ian somehow had the bend creep up rather sooner than expected and while carrying far too much speed. In his attempts to stop with only a front brake, he did manage to get the bike successfully round the corner, however not before he'd had pinch punctured the front tyre :-(. Steve comfortably won the race to change inner tubes.

Despite the final board section been very slippery, most people cleared it without incident, and then enjoyed the final descent.

An excellent ride, even if a large portion of it was spent up in the clouds. Thanks to Steve, Viv, Danny, Ashley, Ian & Neroli.

Stats from my GPS...

Elapsed time: 3hrs 12
Cycling time: 1hr 51
Total distance: 10.3 miles
Moving av speed: 5.5mph
Total ascent: 359m

All of which is slightly debunked by the fact that my GPS refused to talk to the sky for several minutes on several occasions.
